Just thought ye all see my radio setup. All radios are located 4-5 miles away from my own house and are installed in the attic of my parent house which is better located for decent radio reception.
The radios used are
Icom R75 for HF with a Carolina windom Antenna
Bearcat 780XLT for for Milair and SAR
Bearcat 3500XLT for Milair

Antennas used are a Diamond 777 and a 3 element Yagi for AIS
Radios are attached via COM ports and USB to an old Compaq P4 computer running XP Professional SP3 with about 700MB +- RAM

Running on this I have Proscan software to control the 780XLT and it also acts as a webserver and stream of live audio for boththe 780 and the 3500XLT

For HF I use Ham Radio Deluxe and Skype to listen to the streams.
I have 3 soundcards installed on the computer.

I also have an SBS Box and have it connected to the standard antenna mounted on the chimney on about 3 meters of cable.
I get decent reception with this small antenna.
I have the SBS connected through some software called Multi EM which allows me to runn as many instances of Basestaion that I want via the Net, so this allows me to connect directly to my SBS from anywhere in the world once I have an Internet connection.
To add to this I also have teamed up with a gew guys in the UK for have setup an experimental private SBS network to increase coverage across Europe. When this feature is enabled I can get realtime data from across the world on my SBS and have near complete coverage of Europe and even some Austrailian coverage

I also use software called ActiveDisplay which gathers all the SBS data received and will try to put a photo to every aircraft received from online databases.
It can also be setuo to run reports and show alerts for all Military aircraft, Great piece of software.

The scanners log everything they do and upload in realtime an audio recording of all transmissions, so that I can go throught them later if something interesting happens when I'm away from the radios.
It sorts it by data and then by frequency.
The logs are password protected.
I can also listen to my scanner via the mobile phone of required.

I also upload AIS data to Marinetraffic and HF audio to LiveATC. I access the remoteserver by RADMIN and remote Desktop which I allows me to take backups, run updates and reboot.
The Proscan software allows me to fully control the scanners and enter frequencies etc if needed.
I use Planeplotter for tracking Mil Air via MLAT and am a registered groundstation.
The radios are protected by a APC 1000VA UPS and the CPU and Case temp are monitored also.

I hope to have a new BCT 15X next month to add to the collection ;)

So for anyone who currectly lives in a sh1t locations for radio reception, all is not lost, most radios can be operated via a computer and if you can find a hilltop location which has an internet connection you can listen away to it.
Its actually not that difficult to setuo either, mostly involving some simple port forwarding etc.

Thanks Neil, I might add the cost of this is very small. Apart from the radios themselves I got the computer for free as it was been thrown out of an office, so I wiped it and reinstalled the OS.
The soundcards were bought for about a fiver a piece, same goes for the COM cables.
The internet was in the house already and the cost of running the computer 24/7 is relatively small.
I hope to in future run all this of a thin client or laptop to reduce the power used.
Curerently uses approx 320 watts for PC and radios - No monitor needed.

Here is a photo of my setup, sorry about bad quality but used the mobile and lighting was bad.

As you can see its fairly rough and ready, these radios sit up in my attic, You can see the computer in the background, also out of shot are the SBS receiver, AIS decoder and a UBC 3500XLT.
In photo are the IC R75, UBC 780XLT and BCT 15X
